SAHAR

- African capes reinterpreted -

The Sahar collection was created in 2018 and stems from my fascination with the ethnic costumes of Africa. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetic richness of traditional patterns and the virtuosity of the skills employed, I developed capes that are the result of my textile interpretation and my desire to create a contemporary and personal version of these pieces. I suggested above all a re-reading of the artisanal techniques, according to my own manual knowledge. In this way, I created a graphic aesthetic by focusing on the pictoriality of the surfaces, conceived as textile paintings, where materials and colors are associated like touches of paint in an perceptible spontaneity of gesture. The pieces are thus vibrant and alive, charged with the manual gesture, and oscillate between revisited capes, textile pieces and artistic objects.

Sahar is a nomad creative project that I initiated throughout my trips in the Maghreb and the Middle-East. Fascinated by the nomadic culture and the ethnic groups that still live according to their traditions, each of my exploration is a way to understand more about the reality of craftsmanship nowadays. My goal is to discover local craft techniques and to antique traditional objects. I take the time to travel to let the emotions and ideas arise. With my knowledge and skills in tapestry, I weave following the sensations felt in each place I roamed. The resulting woven pieces are also connected to words and texts I write during my trips, as a narration, a journey notebook. Sensory memories to share, treasures to highlight. Wherever I am, the social aspect of getting in touch with the local artisans and to discuss about their work and artistic approach is also really important to me, for the sake of textile heritage learning and preservation.
